Exceptional Bayer player Xhaka guides Switzerland to victory in opening match

Stellar Debut for Switzerland in UEFA Euro: Switzerland edged out Hungary 3-1, marking a strong start in Group A at the UEFA Euro tournament in Germany, with the hosts taking the top spot after a stunning 5-1 victory over Scotland.

Boasting an impressive lineup led by national team stalwart Granit Xhaka and two fresh faces, Murat Yakin's Swiss squad recorded their first win against Hungary. With their victory, they are well on their way to the Round of 16 in the competition.

RB Leverkusen's Xhaka, as usual, was pivotal, showcasing superior leadership, dominating duels, and skillfully orchestrating the Swiss offense. It was, however, former Nuremberg player Kwadwo Duah who opened the scoring in the 12th minute, sending Swiss fans into a frenzy with the early 1-0. Just before the break, Michel Aebischer added the second goal, with initial plans to let their Premier League debut goals wait for a later match.

Despite Hungary's comeback attempt, scoring through Barnabas Varga in the 66th minute, they ultimately disappointed and face a challenging second group match against Germany on Wednesday. Late-match heroics from Breel Embolo ensured a final score of 3-1, with Switzerland rankings second in Group A, trailing Germany who have already advanced. The highly-anticipated match between Switzerland and the hosts on June 23 will conclude the group phase, with Xhaka suggesting his team has already secured progress.

Elegant Goalscoring from Switzerland

Switzerland's aim is to overcome the group stage, and captain Xhaka emphasized their focus on achieving this goal before the tournament. Their method mirrors Xhaka's own approach with Bayer Leverkusen, who enjoyed a successful season at the club level.

From the outset, Switzerland controlled the game, with Mainz's Silvan Widmer setting the tone through a yellow card foul in the 5th minute. Despite dominating play, the young Hungarian side struggled against the Swiss pressure.

It was Switzerland's graceful play that stood out during the opening goal: Aebischer sent the ball accurately to Duah, who neatly finished in front of Leipzig's Peter Gulasci. The Hungarians searched for a response but lacked the composure and precision to mount a serious challenge. Xhaka and the team maintained their midfield superiority throughout the match. Augsburg's Ruben Vargas missed an opportunity for a 2-0 goal in the 20th minute, but Aebischer took advantage of the following opportunity, calmly converting to make it 2-0.

Even after half-time, Switzerland retained control of the match, with Duah (48') and Vargas (54') squandering chances to extend their lead. The Hungarians finally found a rare good opportunity and scored through Varga, leading to an exciting end to the match.
