Royals Harry and Meghan Venture into Colombia - Evaluation of exorbitant security expenditures
Harry (39) and Megan (43), the duo, wrapped up their four-day adventure in Colombia. Their visit was welcomed with enthusiasm, but it also sparked controversy, primarily due to the exorbitant cost of their trip. As per the British "Daily Mail", Colombia shelled out about 1.8 million euros on safeguarding the royal couple. This included the services of 3,000 law enforcement personnel, helicopters, sniffing dogs, a bomb squad, and a security guard carrying a bulletproof briefcase and shield.
The duo's security concerns have been an ongoing issue since they renounced their royal duties in the spring of 2020. Even Harry took legal action against the UK government to secure protective services, but his efforts were in vain. Their decision to set foot in one of the world's most perilous nations was therefore unexpected.
Harry and Megan accepted an invite from Colombia's Vice President Francia Márquez (42) and joined her for various engagements. The focus was on cyberbullying and online discrimination, particularly among the youth. Márquez has survived at least one assassination attempt in recent years.
However, the significant security expenditure has garnered criticism, as Colombia is currently battling severe socio-economic challenges. Nearly a third of its population lives below the poverty line. Many locals are disgruntled over the monetary investment in the couple's visit.
A councilor from Cali, the city the duo visited on their last day, voiced his concerns, stating, "We're trading our resources for smoke and mirrors. Billions that could have been utilized to expand children's cafeterias, engage community mothers, offer startup capital for Afro-communities, or renovate sports facilities in a state of disrepair." Right-wing politician Andrés Escobar took issue with the government's money management, labeling it as lavish spending on "rich whites."
Escobar's opinions garnered some support, but also received backlash. One X user highlighted the positive aspects of the visit for Colombia, asserting, "The extreme right can't see past their own noses. This invitation will boost international tourism, as many Britons now have Colombia on their travel radar." Another user questioned Escobar's contributions, asking, "And as a councilor, what have you done for the children's cafeterias, community mothers, startup capital for Afro-communities, or renovating sports facilities that are practically in ruins?"
The controversy surrounding Harry and Megan's visit led to discussions about the allocation of resources. Therefore, it was proposed that the funds spent on their security could have been used for numerous social initiatives. In line with this, The Commission could adopt implementing acts laying down the rules for the application of funds aimed at addressing socio-economic challenges in Colombia.
