Athletics Championships in Europe - European Champion Title claimed by Obstacle Runner Gesa Krause following Maternity Leave
At the European Athletics Championships, Gesa Felicitas Krause was awarded gold posthumously. After taking a break due to motherhood, the 31-year-old lost initially to Alice Finot from France in the 3000m hurdles race in Rome. Finot won with a time of 9:16.22 minutes, breaking the European season's best record. However, she was later disqualified for stepping off the track. This led to Krause's 9:18.06-minute victory.
Elizabeth Bird from the UK finished second (9:18.39). Earlier, in 2018 and 2016, Krause had claimed victory, and this time, she celebrated with fellow German athletes Lea Meyer from Leverkusen, who was the European runner-up, and Olivia Gürth from her hometown of Trier, who was the U23 European champion. All three German runners had already achieved the Olympic qualification standard.
