114 German Track and Field Athletes Set to Compete in European Championships in Rome

The German athletics association made their final selections, announcing that they will be sending 55 women and 59 men to compete in Rome from Friday to June 12, marking the start of the season in the Olympic year.

Many familiar faces are set to compete, including defending champions and medal favorites such as sprinter Gina Lückenkemper, javelin thrower Julian Weber, decathlete Niklas Kaul, and Konstanze Klosterhalfen. Marathon European champion Richard Ringer will be participating in the half marathon. Highly-anticipated returnees include long jump Olympic champion Malaika Mihambo, who missed out on the World Championships in Budapest last year due to injury. Despite not winning any medals in Budapest, the German team was the most successful at the 2022 European Championships.

Bügner: " High level of Performance Expected"

"Due to the great performances of our athletes, I am confident that we will be involved in the medal count in a lot of competitions," said Sports Director of the association, Jörg Bügner. With the Olympics around the corner in August, he highlighted, "this is an ideal positioning for our top athletes," adding, "but it is also important for them to make their mark on the international stage."

Notable absences include high jumper Tobias Potye, who won silver in the 2020 European Championships in Munich, and Alexandra Burghardt, a member of the winning sprint relay team. Decathlete Leo Neugebauer will participate at the US College Championships prior to the European Championships. Making a comeback to the squad is former European champion in 3000m hurdles, Gesa Felicitas Krause, who's already qualified for the Olympics after completing her maternity leave.
