Escalating from edge to high rise?
After a 17-week hiatus, "Tatort" returns with a bang, or rather, a heap of beef. The tale unfolds in Vienna's rap scene, where the initial investigation into a murder is met with resistance.
What transpires?
Ted Candy, a promising Viennese rapper (played by Aleksandar Simonovski, known as "Yugo" in the underground), is on the brink of success. Charismatic, capable, and ambitious, he yearns for a switch to a major label, leaving his current patron Akman 47 (Murat Seven) in the dust. Akman is celebrated primarily in the outskirts for his outdated gangsta rap style. When Ted's lifeless body is discovered near Akman's studio after a concert, suspicion immediately points at Akman's violent fantasies transformed into reality.
Upon confronting Akman, detectives Moritz Eisner (Harald Krassnitzer) and Bibi Fellner (Adele Neuhauser) are met with denials. Akman claims the intense social media feud preceding the murder was merely a publicity stunt, intending to boost the following counts of both and collaborate for mutual benefit.
As the investigation deepens, the case becomes increasingly complex, and Ted's estranged, alcoholic mother becomes an unexpected puzzle piece.
What truly unfolds?
"Your mother" serves as a bridge between the present and the past in rap music, for both the audience and the artists. According to Yugo, who has made a name for himself in the rap scene, "The authors and artists attempted to depict hip-hop in the here and now while incorporating elements from 20 years ago. Connecting the two sometimes worked, sometimes didn't. For instance, an '8 Mile' style rap battle was planned, but wasn't possible due to my brief intervention. In Ted Candy's world, such an event simply wouldn't occur."
Skippable moment?
The dream sequence where the detectives join in their own rap performance: It remains forever an amusing, unrealistic concept.
Impressive factor?
Subtle but undeniably satisfying, the show beautifully mirrors the rap scene thanks to screenwriter Franziska Pflaum and director Mirjam Unger's earnest listening to Yugo's advice.
Rating?
A 7 out of 10. "Your mother" boasts a strong and well-executed plot, but it unfortunately loses momentum during the middle part.
