Third Tour stage - Eritrean Girmay wins sprint finish in Turin
An Eritrean professional cyclist Biniam Girmay became the first from Eritrea to win a stage of the Tour de France. The 24-year-old surged unstoppably into Turin on Day three of the Grand Tour to claim victory.
After the 230.8 flat kilometers between Piacenza and the northern metropolis of Turin, the sprinter from the Georg Zimmermann-led team surprised everyone with his win over Colombian Fernando Gaviria and Belgian Arnaud de Lie. It was the first victory for the Intermarche_Team.
Richard Carapaz of Ecuador took over the Yellow Jersey of the leader from Tour de France superstar Tadej Pogacar. Carapaz benefited from the fact that he was ahead of Pogacar on the sprint stage. In total, there were four riders tied in the general classification before the stage. Therefore, the cyclist is currently leading, who has the best average placings.
On Tuesday, the general classification could change significantly, as it goes over the 2642 meter high Tour-Classic Col du Galibier. A total of 139.6 kilometers await the return to France from Pinerolo to Valloire.
