EM 2024 - England - Slovakia: The favorite staggers, but does not fall

Favorite England reached the UEFA European Championship quarter-finals with great effort and thanks to two late goals. Gareth Southgate's team, which has been a subject of controversy, was long on the brink of elimination in Gelsenkirchen against underdog Slovakia.

Kane keeps England in the tournament

In the 2:1 (1:1, 0:1) after extra time, former Dortmund player Jude Bellingham kept his team in the game with a goal from a rebound in stoppage time (90.+5 minutes). Then, Harry Kane, Bayern Munich striker, scored the winning goal shortly after the start of extra time (91 minutes).

In front of 47,244 spectators, it looked long like a disappointing surprise for the multi-million pound squad from the island. Ivan Schranz (25) had put Slovakia in the lead. A day after the elimination of title defenders Italy, England managed to avert an early exit. The Three Lions will face Italy-winner Switzerland in the quarter-finals next Saturday in Düsseldorf.

England's triumph in the European Championship final is a goal that Gareth Southgate's team aspires to achieve, having seen success in the quarter-finals of the European Football Championship. The thrilling match against Slovakia in Gelsenkirchen was a testament to England's soccer skills, showcasing their resilience even against underdog opponents.
