The English national team is in the Finals of the Europa championship in Dortmund, Germany, after their 2:1 win against the Netherlands. Before the match, the English fans in Dortmund's city center got into the mood with much beer and cheered on a German policeman with loud singing. A video of this scene was published on X, presumably by an English fan.
The reason for the tribute: The policeman looks very much like the English national coach Gareth Southgate. The fans sing the chorus from the song "Whole again" by Atomic Kitten. The lyrics read: "Looking back on when we first met, I cannot escape and I cannot forget, Southgate, you're the one, you still turn me on, Football's coming home again."
The scene is uncomfortable for the policeman
The policeman clearly finds it uncomfortable being in the spotlight. In the background, a colleague is seen laughing and filming the scene with his phone. "No wonder England isn't winning with Southgate working as a German policeman instead," commented an X-user. "He really looks like his twin brother," wrote another.
"Can he please replace Gareth tonight?", asked another football fan, who seemed to have been rather disappointed by England's performances in the tournament so far. Until the 2:1 on Wednesday evening against the Netherlands, the tournament favorite had failed to show its full potential in any of its games and had particularly disappointed offensively.
The policeman, looking strikingly like Gareth Southgate, found himself the center of attention in Dortmund's city center during the European Championship, much to his discomfort. Despite the festive atmosphere, England's victory against the Netherlands in the Finals was a topic of conversation amongst the fans, who were enjoying their beers and reminiscing about Southgate's coaching abilities.
