Emil Forsberg treats himself to a fairytale goal to say goodbye to goosebumps
It's a story that only soccer can write. In his last game at his stadium, that of RB Leipzig, Emil Forsberg scores shortly after coming on as a substitute. He kisses his club's logo, scores another goal and leads his Bulls to a Bundesliga victory over Hoffenheim.
Playmaker Emil Forsberg gave RB Leipzig an early Christmas present at his farewell performance. Led by the Swede, who is keen to move on, the DFB Cup winners won 3:1 (1:1) against direct Champions League rivals TSG Hoffenheim. With 32 points, the Saxons jumped to third place in the top flight for the time being - nine points ahead of the Kraichgauers.
International Lukas Klostermann (34'), Forsberg himself (70') and Mohamed Simakan (74') scored for Leipzig, while Ozan Kabak was successful for Hoffenheim after a mistake by RB goalkeeper Janis Blaswich (42').
It was a very special last home game in RB kit for Forsberg, who is about to move to the New York Red Bulls after nine years. He first came on as a substitute in the 66th minute and then scored the important 2:1 four minutes later. According to media reports, the Swede will leave the club after the end-of-season game at Werder Bremen on Tuesday.
Forsberg will only sit on the bench
"We'll see when and how, but he will be on the pitch," coach Marco Rose had announced beforehand. Initially, however, Forsberg sat on the bench wrapped up tight and watched Leipzig pile on the pressure. As Hoffenheim's five-man backline stood up well despite their opponents' superiority, RB only had a few half-chances at the start before Xavi Simons (17) tested TSG goalkeeper Oliver Baumann more seriously for the first time.
Without the injured goalscorer Wout Weghorst and Maximilian Beier, who was out with an infection, TSG had to hope for counter-attacks. Andrej Kramaric (24) hit the outside of the net after one such move. Leipzig remained the dominant team, however. Yussuf Poulsen (30) should have taken the lead in a one-on-one with the strong Baumann, which Klostermann did four minutes later with a deflection from a scramble.
"Emil Forsberg"
Because RB did not immediately convert their superiority into a second goal - after a great Xavi solo save from Baumann (36'), Hoffenheim got back into the game with a bit of luck. After a free-kick cross from Robert Skov, the onrushing Blaswich flew past the ball, which Kabak used his entire body to put into the net to equalize.
Immediately after the break, Leipzig continued to show more compulsion, with Xavi excelling as usual with his dribbling. After shaking off his defenders with ease five minutes after the restart, the Dutchman fired home at the near post. Rose now pressed for the winning goal, partly due to Forsberg's substitution. And indeed, the 32-year-old scored with ice-cold precision after a wonderful assist from Lois Openda. Forsberg had also failed to hit the crossbar before Simakan's goal. At the very end, Forsberg scored a goal for offside. Then the fans sang "Emil Forsberg" and it was over.
