Eintracht draws hope in relegation battle

Still 17th in the 2nd Bundesliga, but at least another win. And a clear one at that. Eintracht Braunschweig turned a deficit into a win against Wehen Wiesbaden. It was a different story for their rivals from Hanover, who failed to win for the fourth time in a row.

Hannover 96 - Karlsruher SC 2:2 (0:1)

Hannover 96 squandered their strong first half of the season in the 2nd Bundesliga in the final few meters. The team from Lower Saxony, who were still dreaming of promotion at the beginning of November in third place in the table, failed to beat Karlsruher SC 2:2 (0:1) in their final home game of the year. After four games in a row without a win, the former Bundesliga club has slipped to sixth place and could fall even further down the table at the weekend.

KSC are well on their way to bringing a disappointing first half of the season to a conciliatory conclusion. Despite six points from the last four games, the gap to the relegation zone is still dangerously small.

Former international Marcel Halstenberg gave the visitors the early lead. The returnee initially cleared the ball, but then deflected a cross from Leon Jensen, which Budu Siwiwadse missed, into his own goal (11'). Shortly after the break, ex-Hanover man Lars Stindl made it 2:0 (53') after a capital mistake in the 96ers' build-up play. However, substitutes Andreas Voglsammer (72) and Sei Muroya (90.+1) rescued a point for the hosts.

After going behind early on, Hannover increasingly took control of the game - and almost equalized, but KSC goalkeeper Patrick Drewes saved Havard Nielsen's direct shot (33'). But the visitors remained more efficient: Igor Matanovic took the ball from Phil Neumann and sent on Stindl, who gave former national keeper Ron-Robert Zieler no chance. But Voglsammer gave the Reds hope again after Kolja Oudenne's assist. However, Christopher Scott initially only hit the underside of the crossbar (80'). Muroya was then successful with a follow-up shot.

Wehen Wiesbaden - Eintracht Braunschweig 1:3 (1:0)

Eintracht Braunschweig regained hope in the relegation battle after their first away win of the season. The 3:1 (0:1) win at newly promoted SV Wehen Wiesbaden saw the Lower Saxony side in 17th place in the table close the gap to the relegation places to five points, at least until Sunday.

Braunschweig initially fell behind thanks to a header from central defender Aleksandar Vukotic (18'). However, the visitors turned up the heat after the break. Fabio Kaufmann (48') and substitute Rayan Philippe (56') turned the game around after the break. With the lead behind them, Eintracht then clearly dominated the game and increased the lead to 3:1 with Kaufmann's second goal (76'), after he had been set up by Robert Ivanov with a pin-pass.

It was Wiesbaden's third defeat in a row. Prior to that, the promoted side had won four games in a row. The Hessians remain in ninth place in the table with 21 points, at least until Saturday.
