Due to a wrist injury, Angel Reese will be sidelined for the remainder of the WNBA season.
The Cosmos declared the news on a Saturday night. It's a major setback for Chicago, currently occupying the eighth and final playoff spot, with Atlanta Dream, Washington Mystics, and Dallas Wings still in the race.
Chicago has only six regular-season games remaining.
"What a year! I never thought the last basket of my rookie season would be a 3, maybe God was hinting at more of this in Year 2, lol," Reese wrote on X and Instagram, referring to her three-point shot in the fourth quarter on Friday, helping her team secure a 92-78 win against the Los Angeles Sparks.
"Despite it all, I've proven I belong in this league, even when others doubted me. My only wish was to leave an impact in the W. I can confidently state I've done that and will keep striving. I'm experiencing a mix of emotions with a season-ending injury, but I'm also filled with gratitude for what's to come."
Reese had a remarkable performance in the Friday game against the Sparks, scoring 24 points and grabbing 12 rebounds. She's averaged 13.6 points and 13.1 rebounds per game this season.
"Although this is not my timing, but God's, I'm finally able to take a physical and mental break. God challenges his strongest warriors most," Reese stated.
Reese, selected seventh overall in this year's WNBA draft, was no stranger to creating history in her rookie season.
On September 1, the ex-Louisiana State University standout shattered the WNBA's single-season rebound record, surpassing Sylvia Fowles, who retired after the 2022 season as the league's all-time rebound leader.
Reese also broke the single-season offensive rebound record and has already become the quickest player in WNBA history to record 20 double-doubles, and she holds the record for the most consecutive double-doubles (15) in WNBA history.
Reese recorded 26 double-doubles this season, joining an exclusive club of two players in WNBA history to achieve this feat in a single year.
Despite Reese's stellar performance in the sport, Chicago's playoff hopes might be affected due to her season-ending injury. After breaking multiple records in her rookie season, Reese's focus now shifts towards recovery, hoping to continue making an impact in the sport when she returns.
