Dr. Beach Identifies the Top 10 American Beaches for 2024
The beloved beach of Duke Kahanamoku in Oahu, Hawaii ranks as number one among the top 10 US beaches according to "Dr. Beach," coastal scientist Stephen Leatherman's annual list. This peaceful retreat isn't simply a random choice, as it secured the second position in his 2023 list.
The picturesque spot, secluded from the hustle and bustle of tourist-centered Waikiki Beach, is often favored due to its wide expanse of sandy shores and protection offered by an offshore coral reef. Additionally, the vicinity of the Duke Kahanamoku Lagoon, a popular swimming spot, adds to its charm.
Due to the overwhelming popularity of Hawaii's stunning coastlines, the 50th state contains an impressive three entries on the esteemed list, which showcases some of the best beaches across the nation. Wanting to explore all ten blue-wonder worlds? Hawaii is your destination.
Hawaii, although attracting visitors from around the globe, has its own dilemma in regulating the soaring influx of crowds and occasionally unruly tourists. Their tourism website, Go Hawaii, offers tips on preserving the islands' rich culture and environment for future generations.
The likes of New York and Florida also feature on the list, with each state graced by two outstanding beaches. South Carolina, Massachusetts, and California complete the top ten, boasting singularly spectacular coastlines each.
Since 1991, Leatherman, a professor at the Department of Earth & Environment of Florida International University, has dedicated his time to assessing beaches and compiling the anticipated yearly list. Employing a system of 50 criteria, these pristine shores are graded based on factors such as sand and water quality, wave size, beach shape, wildlife, safety, and cleanliness.
If Hawaii doesn't have a slot on your travel itinerary, the runner-up can be found in the busiest region of the United States.
Welcome to posh Southampton, Long Island, New York, home to the second-best beach in the US. Coopers Beach, masked from the chilling Labrador Currents, is a sheltered gem backed by high sand dunes adorned with American beach grass and glamorous mansions. Just last year, it ranked as the third-best beach.
Meanwhile, our hotspot for sunshine, Florida, showcases two beaches within its state, both of which are situated on the exceptionally sunny Gulf Coast. This decision is especially noteworthy, as they outranked their Atlantic-facing companions.
