Donald Duck: Celebrity with No Trousers

In a cartoon movie, Donald Duck made his debut into the world 90 years ago. This character has stayed true to his nature ever since - lazy, often dealing with bad luck, but also adventurous and always a great uncle to Tick, Trick, and Track.

90 years ago during his birth, Donald Duck was already lazy, preferring to avoid work. He made his first appearance in the Disney cartoon film "The Wise Little Hen," where he sports a blue sailor jacket and no pants. While the duck might come off as clumsy, he's been a popular figure across the globe since then.

Just a minor role in this first film, Donald's stardom was just beginning. Mickey Mouse celebrated his 90th birthday in 2018, having made his Hollywood debut in the short "Steamboat Willie" in 1928 and becoming a significant hit in the 30s. Disney sought to add variety to the already heartwarming and well-known Mickey. Enter the clumsy, yet lovable Donald who could be cantankerous and foul-smelling.

This odd creature represents the worries and everyday issues of folks in the real world - constantly broke, plagued with misfortune, contending with humourless believers, and officials. One of his earliest antics includes being sentenced to prison for nine weeks, four days, and three hours over insurance fraud. He's stubbornly selfless, especially when protecting his family and loved ones from danger. And he's an eager adventurer.

A world was formed entirely around Donald's life. There's his rich, miserly uncle Scrooge McDuck, his grumpy girlfriend Daisy, and his cheeky nephews Huey, Dewey, and Louie living in Duckburg. His family and friends form the foundation of this ducks' home while he interacts with them throughout various misadventures and simple triumphs.

Duckburg is just one of many locations where Donald is celebrated. Special editions of funny books keep his legacy alive, along with a four-part special edition commemorating his jubilee year. A 368-page luxury book showcases Donald's life, including comics from different periods in his journey. All of this is a testament to the blended sympathies fans have for the character.

He's depicted as the uncle of Huey, Dewey, and Louie, the nephew of Scrooge McDuck, a friend of Daisy Duck, and his many adventures with Scrooge and his little friend, Gyro Gearloose. Donald's nature may be simple, but it's what makes him appealing on various levels; "A mix that works," says publisher Wolf Stegmaier affectionately. "Donald Duck is charming, lovable, yet clumsy and German cartoonist Jan Gulbransson agrees. The crude, short-tempered nature of Donald is what makes drafting his stories entertaining. As to why Donald seems to never wear pants? "It's just for animation," Gulbransson shares, "pants would make it harder to create the detailed movements in the movies."

Donald Duck is popular enough to have "fans" who call themselves Donaldists, starting a "German Organization of Non-Commercial Followers of Pure Donaldism," known as D.O.N.A.L.D. in 1977. Its members regard "Little Master Duck's" everyday life and adventures with deep appreciation. Fans gather at regular conventions and discussions to better understand this remarkable character.

The legendary artist Carl Barks and talented translator Erika Fuchs are honoured as the founders of this organization that grasps the fascination with "The Duck." And if you want to visit Donald in real life, you can find his star on the "Walk of Fame" in Hollywood. He was honoured with a plaque in 2004 on his 70th-year milestone. But his dear Mickey Mouse came before him, securing a spot much earlier when he turned 50. Even so, Donald might not have pants on, but his charm has captivated comic enthusiasts worldwide.
