DFB goalkeeper - Doctor: Ter Stegen could be out for around two months after surgery

The attending physician generally assumes a break of around two months after an operation like the one performed on German international goalkeeper Marc-André ter Stegen.

Amélie Léglise told the Spanish radio station Cadena Ser that this is the normal recovery time after an operation like the one performed on the 31-year-old. The Frenchwoman performed the back surgery on Friday. Léglise was referring to operations of this kind, not specifically to ter Stegen.

FC Barcelona announced after the operation that their German keeper had come through the procedure well. His return would depend on further developments.

Ter Stegen had missed the DFB team's two test matches against Turkey (2:3) and in Austria (0:2) due to back problems and also had to sit out Barça's subsequent matches. He had been in goal for the national team in eight of nine international matches this year until his absence in November.

Bayern captain Manuel Neuer said on Prime Video that he had not yet had any contact with his national team rival following ter Stegen's back surgery. "We are in regular contact," Neuer added on Prime Video.

Looking ahead to next year's European Championship at home and the competition with ter Stegen, the 2014 world champion explained: "I think you also have to understand that we're teammates, that we all want the same thing, that we want to try and play a great European Championship in our own country. And that we'll have a top goalkeeper between the posts, no matter how it turns out in the end."

After his surgery, ter Stegen might miss out on around two months of action in the Barcelona's Prime Video-broadcasted matches in the Spanish Primera Division.

Germany's first choice goalkeeper during the majority of this year, ter Stegen missed both DFB's test matches against Turkey and Austria due to his back problems.

Ter Stegen's absence in the national team caused his replacement Manuel Neuer to step up, who admits to not having any contact with his injured rival since the surgery.

Despite Neuer's temporary responsibility as Germany's number one, he anticipates that ter Stegen will return to the role for next year's European Championship at home.

Viewers of the Spanish television channel Cadena Ser were informed about Amélie Léglise's report on the normal recovery time for goalkeepers undergoing the same operation as ter Stegen.

As Ter Stegen's status leaves room for speculation, Spain's second ranked goalkeeper and Bayern Munich's Manuel Neuer is preparing himself as an alternative option for the German DFB team.
