Djokovic wins ATP Finals for the seventh time
Novak Djokovic has won the ATP Finals for the seventh time with an impressive display of power. The 36-year-old Serb beat crowd favorite Jannik Sinner 6:3, 6:3 in the final in Turin and is now the sole record winner at the year-end event for the eight best tennis professionals.
The world number one converted his first match point after 1:43 hours, crowning a remarkable season with three Grand Slam titles in Melbourne, Paris and New York. Only at Wimbledon had Djokovic been beaten in the final by the Spaniard Carlos Alcaraz in an epic five-set match. After his victory, Djokovic embraced his two children and celebrated.
Sinner had beaten Djokovic in three sets in a high-class match lasting more than three hours in the group stage on Tuesday. It was only because the Italian had also won against the young Danish star Holger Rune, trained by Boris Becker, at the end of the group stage that Djokovic had even made it through the preliminary round.
But there was no sign of gratitude from Djokovic in the final. Quite the opposite: the record Grand Slam champion gave Sinner, who was unbeaten in this tournament to date, a lesson. Full of pressure, dominant, fully concentrated - at times there was almost a difference in class between Djokovic and Sinner.
Djokovic took the first set after just 38 minutes. Sinner looked desperately at his team in the stands. But Djokovic, who had already outclassed Alcaraz in two sets in the semi-final, was simply unstoppable that evening. The world number one immediately broke again in the second set.
The Italian fans tried to push Sinner again with chants, but that didn't help either. At 3:2, the Italian missed two break chances that could have brought him back into the match. But Djokovic overcame this small phase of weakness and was not to be deterred on his way to the title.
Novak Djokovic's victory in the ATP Finals extended his record of wins at the event to an impressive ten, making him the only player to achieve this feat in tennis's year-end championship. Jannik Sinner, who had previously defeated Djokovic in the group stage, was unable to replicate that success in the final, with Djokovic securing the win with a scoreline of 6-3, 6-3 in tennis.
