Tennis sensation Novak Djokovic experienced a frightening moment at the Rome tournament when he got hit on the head with a water bottle. The current number one player fell to the ground, seeking treatment, but organizers confirmed his health was not a major concern. The incident triggered an uproar.
In a dramatic turn of events at the Masters 1000 competition in Rome, top-ranked tennis star Novak Djokovic received a water bottle to the head after defeating Frenchman Corentin Moutet with relative ease, 6:3, 6:1. Witnesses and spectators described the scene as Djokovic walking by, signing autographs, when the bottle suddenly fell from above, hitting him on the head. The 36-year-old Serb dropped the pen he was using to autograph, momentarily losing his balance. Initially, people thought it was a targeted attack, but it turned out to be just an accident.
After the incident, a representative for the Italian Tennis Federation (FITP) spoke with AFP, stating that Djokovic's head bled slightly, but there was no indication he would withdraw from the event. The wound did not need stitches, and he was quickly attended to by a security team and helpers around him. Djokovic will face Alejandro Tabilo from Chile in the third round, who earlier defeated Yannick Hanfmann from Karlsruhe.
The tournament's organizers issued a statement, assuring that Djokovic had been treated appropriately with medication and left the Foro Italico.
