Tennis - Djokovic and Alcaraz play for Wimbledon title
Title defender Carlos Alcaraz and record-Grand-Slam winner Novak Djokovic clash again in the Wimbledon final for the title. Djokovic won his semifinal in London dominantly against the Italian Lorenzo Musetti 6:4, 6:7 (2:7), 6:4. The 37-year-old Serb advanced to his sixth consecutive final in London and made the 2023 re-match perfect.
Before that, Alcaraz defeated Daniil Medvedev, the Russian world number five, 7:6 (1:7), 6:3, 6:4. A year ago, the Spaniard triumphed in a high-class duel in five sets against Djokovic and dethroned the seven-time Wimbledon Champion.
In the encounter with the first-time Grand-Slam semifinalist Musetti, Djokovic started brilliantly and had control over the match for the most part. The match developed into an entertaining semifinal, where the top star had to catch up with a 1:3 deficit in the second set and dominated the Tiebreak clearly. In the third set, Djokovic earned a break early for a decisive advantage. At 5:3, Djokovic let match points slip away, then sealed his victory.
Djokovic can now win his eighth Wimbledon title and thus equal the Swiss record champion Roger Federer. Moreover, he would become the sole record holder at the Majors for both men and women with his 25th Grand-Slam victory. So far, he has as many as the Australian Margaret Court, 24 Major titles.
There was a question mark over Djokovic's participation in this year's tournament at its start due to a knee injury he sustained almost a month prior at the French Open.
- Despite the uncertainty surrounding his participation due to a knee injury, Novak Djokovic, hailing from Serbia, managed to reach the Wimbledon final.
- In the same tournament, Daniil Medvedev, ranked fifth in the world and representing Russia, lost to Carlos Alcaraz from Spain in an intense match.
- The upcoming final at Wimbledon will see a rematch of the 2022 final, with Novak Djokovic facing off against Carlos Alcaraz.
- Should Djokovic emerge victorious in the final, he will equal the record set by Roger Federer, a Swiss tennis legend, by winning his eighth Wimbledon title.
- The United Kingdom, specifically London, will once again host an exciting endgame in tennis as Novak Djokovic and Carlos Alcaraz battle it out for the Wimbledon title.
