ABBA receives recognition from King Carl XVI Gustaf - Distinguished accolade for pop band

The legendary pop band ABBA's quartet - Agnetha Fältskog (74), Björn Ulvaeus (79), Benny Andersson (77), and Anni-Frid Lyngstad (78) - was honored with a distinguished accolade in Sweden on Friday, 31st May. They were invited to the Royal Palace in Stockholm to receive the esteemed award from their majesties, King Carl XVI. Gustaf (78) and Queen Silvia (80).

Recipients of the Royal Order of Vasa for "exceptional services"

The ABBA members were granted the Royal Order of Vasa as Commanders 1st Class, which is a prestigious award given for personal contributions to Sweden or Swedish interests. This unique honor was presented after a 50-year hiatus, allowing the general public to propose esteemed Swedish citizens. The Swedish government and King Carl XVI. Gustaf confirmed the ABBA quartet as the worthy recipients of the accolade in the beginning of the year.

ABBA's remarkable achievements were recognized for "prominent success in the Swedish and global music industry," as mentioned in their justification. Additionally, the group is among the most renowned musical acts in the world, dominating the pop scene in the mid-1970s and boasting international renown and commercial success.

Thirteen exceptional Swedes were celebrated during the event at the Royal Palace, including two 2023 Nobel Prize laureates: the French-Swedish physicist Anne L'Huillier and Svante Pääbo (69), who received the unparalleled prize for medicine.

His Majesty, King Carl XVI. Gustaf, presented the honors in a crimson box, while Queen Silvia personally carried the diplomas for all the recipients and recipients. Addressing the recipients at the ceremony, the monarch indicated, "The award you're getting today is Sweden's token of appreciation for your remarkable accomplishments."
