The Brazilian squad held the group stage match predominantly, boasting a 73% ball possession and taking a total of 19 shots. Yet, they remained scoreless at SoFi Stadium, California.
Patrick Sequeira, Costa Rica's goalkeeper, worked tirelessly throughout the game, as the Brazilian team missed 12 opportunities to find the back of the net.
At one instance, cameras captured Brazilian football legend Neymar, who appeared frustrated in the crowd following another squandered opportunity by his side. The forward is still recovering from a severe knee injury and is out of the tournament.
Initially, the match saw a goal by Marquinhos in the first half, but it was ruled off-side after a review by the video assistant referee (VAR).
Lucas Paqueta, in particular, came the closest to scoring with a splendid second-half strike that hit the post. Paqueta was also guilty of wasting more than one chance when it seemed simpler to score.
"We played our game; we have to enhance our finishing, specifically mine, so we can win," Paqueta stated after the game, as reported by BBC Sport.
Costa Rica, conversely, managed no shots on target, largely sitting back during the game.
Surprisingly, the team's star, Vinícius Junior, was kept relatively under wraps throughout the match, failing to inspire his side to victory like he often does for Real Madrid.
Eventually, Vinícius Junior was substituted in the second half, a decision that left Neymar perplexed in the stands. The injured star gazed in disbelief with his arms outstretched as Vinícius Jr. exited the field.
Brazil grappling for identity
Despite its reputation as one of the world's greatest soccer nations, the current Brazil team is still navigating a challenging transitional phase.
The team recently experienced consecutive World Cup qualifier losses for the first time ever, followed by another defeat. That third defeat - a 1-0 loss to Argentina at the Maracana - was historically significant, marking the first time Brazil lost a home World Cup qualifier.
Interim coach Fernando Diniz was dismissed in January, halfway through his one-year tenure, and replaced by veteran coach Dorival Júnior, who oversaw close victories against England and Mexico, and draws against the USA and Spain before the Copa América.
However, despite the team's recent setbacks, the pressure and anticipation remain high at home, given the caliber of attacking talent.
Brazil will have the opportunity to commence their tournament against Paraguay in their following Group D match, before facing a tougher challenge against Colombia.
