DFL announces date for FC Bayern catch-up match
The Bundesliga match between FC Bayern Munich and Union Berlin was prevented by the onset of winter. And it fits in quite well with the plans of Bayern coach Thomas Tuchel.
The canceled Bundesliga match between FC Bayern Munich and 1. FC Union Berlin will be rescheduled for next year. As announced by the German Football League and the clubs, the matchday 13 fixture will take place on January 24, 2024 (8.30 pm/Sky and in the live ticker on ntv.de) and therefore on a Wednesday. The match was canceled last weekend due to wintry weather conditions and the associated safety risks. After the short Christmas break, the season will resume on January 12 with Bayern's home match against TSG 1899 Hoffenheim.
Coach Thomas Tuchel recently made the surprising announcement that the team might use the time afterwards for a short training camp. That would be possible given the scheduling of the Union game. "A training camp like that does something to you, because normally you can spend more time together in the climatic conditions in which you do it," said Tuchel before the original date of the Union game, explaining his plan to travel to the sun again in January. "You stay on the pitch longer, train more in small groups and can work more tactically because the players can stay on the pitch longer without the risk of them getting cold." Bayern will not play the second half of the season, i.e. the 18th matchday, until January 21 at home against Werder Bremen.
An earlier date this week was also not possible due to DFB regulations: Although both teams would have had time after their surprisingly early elimination in the DFB Cup, no Bundesliga matches are allowed to take place on cup matchdays - third round matches are played on Tuesday and Wednesday this week.
