DFB team spared a hammering at home European Championships

The DFB team will face supposedly doable tasks in the preliminary round of next year's European Championship at home. In Group A, national coach Julian Nagelsmann's team will play against Scotland, Hungary and Switzerland.

The German national soccer team will play against Scotland, Hungary and Switzerland in the group stage of the 2024 European Championship at home. This was the result of the ceremonial draw on Saturday in Hamburg's Elbphilharmonie concert hall. The Scots will be the opening opponents for the DFB team of national coach Julian Nagelsmann, who was unable to travel by plane to the draw in the north due to the onset of winter in the south, in the Munich Arena on June 14.

The national team will play against Hungary on June 19 in Stuttgart, and Germany will close out the group stage against the Swiss on June 23 in Frankfurt/Main. The two group winners and the four best third-placed teams will advance to the round of 16, where Germany could face Spain or England. The goal for all teams is the final in Berlin's Olympic Stadium on July 14.

DFB in a low mood

After the disappointing November matches against Turkey (2:3) and in Vienna against Austria (0:2), Nagelsmann's selection is again in a low mood. Preparations for the European Championship do not resume until March, with test matches against the Netherlands and in France. "The truth will come in the summer," DFB sporting director Rudi Völler said on Friday.

Nagelsmann had major travel problems due to the heavy snowfall and all flights at Munich airport were canceled. The 36-year-old therefore got into his car in the morning and made it to Hamburg on time. His assistant coaches Benjamin Glück and Sandro Wagner, on the other hand, did not make the trip.

Völler and association president Bernd Neuendorf had already arrived in Hamburg before Saturday as important representatives of the European Championship hosts. During the one-hour gala, star tenor Jonas Kaufmann and star violinist David Garrett performed in the concert hall and the drawing of the lots took about 20 minutes.
