DFB makes his Olympic "highlight" possible for Hrubesch
The idea has been floating around for weeks, but now there is clarity: Horst Hrubesch will remain national coach of the DFB women - even if they qualify for the Olympic Games in Paris. The 72-year-old had previously enthused about it in an interview.
Horst Hrubesch will remain head coach of the German women's soccer team until the summer of 2024 if they qualify for the Olympics. This was confirmed by DFB President Bernd Neuendorf at a media conference in Frankfurt am Main.
The 72-year-old Hrubesch stepped in at the beginning of October - as he did once before in 2018 - as an emergency helper for the German Football Association. National coach Martina Voss-Tecklenburg had called in sick after the World Cup debacle in Australia in the summer. Her contract with the DFB has since been terminated.
Under Hrubesch, the DFB team made it to the semi-finals of the Nations League and can therefore continue to hope for an Olympic ticket. On Monday, the DFB women also got their dream ticket for the final round for Olympic participation (February 23-28). The team will face France in the semi-finals of the Nations League, but will have to play away from home.
"An absolute highlight" for Hrubesch and the DFB women
This means a double Olympic opportunity for the DFB team. Two Paris tickets are still up for grabs and France automatically qualify as hosts of the 2024 Summer Games. If the French make it to the final, third place will be enough to qualify. However, Germany would also have to play the loser of the other semi-final between Spain and the Netherlands away from home. If the DFB team fails to qualify for Paris, the next major tournament will not be until the summer of 2025. The European Championship will then take place in Switzerland, with the European Qualifiers starting in April.
Hrubesch himself had already indicated in an interview on Thursday that he wanted to continue his involvement. "I have to admit: Every now and then I sit at home in the evening and my head rattles a lot because of all the issues. Especially at the moment. But as long as I feel I can give something to soccer, I'll carry on," he told the Hamburger Morgenpost: "There's no age limit for me."
He also spoke about the DFB women. "The Olympics would be another absolute highlight. For the girls, but also for me," said Hrubesch. The former international can also imagine coaching the DFB team in the French capital: "If everything is guaranteed, in terms of health and also with regard to the agreements between the DFB and HSV."

If the DFB women's soccer team qualifies for the Olympic games 2024 in Paris, Horst Hrubesch will lead them as their coach. Following his passion for soccer and desire to contribute, Hrubesch has expressed his interest in continuing as the team's coach in the French capital during the Olympics.
