Despite Reitz brace: Gladbach only draw against Werder

Gladbach's new fan favorite Rocco Reitz almost became the match winner against Werder Bremen. But the Borussia defense made some serious lapses.

Matchday 15 - Despite Reitz brace: Gladbach only draw against Werder

Even a brace from shooting star Rocco Reitz was not enough to secure Borussia Mönchengladbach's sixth home win in a row against Werder Bremen. Despite the two goals from the new Gladbach fan favorite (45th minute/49th), Borussia only drew 2:2 (1:1) at the start of the 15th Bundesliga matchday.

Two gross defensive errors by Gladbach rescued a fortunate away point for coach Ole Werner's visitors - only their second ever this season. Rafael Borré (7') and Marvin Ducksch (76') benefited from bad exposures by Gladbach's Joe Scally and Nico Elvedi. A red card against Christoph Kramer in stoppage time (90.+2) was rescinded after viewing the video footage.

"We haven't yet managed to remain consistently solid defensively," Gladbach coach Gerardo Seoane told DAZN before the game in view of his team's second-worst defense in the Bundesliga to date. Instead of taking a step towards the European Cup places, Gladbach are stagnating in mid-table with 17 points from 16 games. Werder have two points less.

Match begins with investor protest

The game began with the silence previously announced by the active fan scene from all over Germany. To protest against the planned investor deal by the German Football League (DFL), both fan camps refused to show their usual support for the first twelve minutes of the match. Instead, DFL insults could be read on banners.

The silence of the opening minutes was only interrupted by the cheers of the 4,000 Werder fans who had made the journey. The visitors took the lead early on because Gladbach showed catastrophic defensive behavior before Borré took the lead. After a cross from Romano Schmid from half-field, the Colombian was the only Bremen player in the middle of the Gladbach back line, but he was far too free.

Offensively, however, the hosts could once again thank the driving force Reitz, who turned the game around in the meantime. Only after a five-minute interruption, after chocolate coins were thrown onto the pitch from the Gladbach fan block as a protest against the DFL, did Borussia's play pick up.

Gladbach fail to make use of spaces

However, the hosts were initially unable to exploit the surprisingly generous spaces offered by Bremen. It was not until shortly before half-time that Reitz scored a deserved equalizer with a successful turning shot.

And the U21 international added his fourth goal of the season shortly after the break. Once again, Borussia had an astonishing amount of space on the counter-attack. Both goals from the new Borussia favorite, who has established himself as an undisputed regular since the summer, were set up by the equally strong Robin Hack on his Bundesliga starting debut.

Nevertheless, it was not enough to win, as the Borussia defense practically gifted Bremen the equalizer. Elvedi misjudged the ball and it fell to Ducksch's feet.
