DEL goalies wildly hit each other
It's not unusual for fists to fly in ice hockey. It only becomes unusual when two goalies start punching each other. This is what happened in the game between the Cologne Sharks and the Nuremberg Ice Tigers. While the Nuremberg goalkeeper wins the duel, the Cologne team wins the game.
Brawls are nothing unusual in the German Ice Hockey League, but Tobias Ancicka and Niklas Treutle caused an altercation with rarity value. In the game between the Cologne Sharks and the Nuremberg Ice Tigers, the two goalkeepers came to blows this afternoon. There was no winner in the fight between Ancicka (Cologne) and Treutle (Nuremberg), with the Sharks winning the game 4:2 (1:0, 1:2, 2:0).
For Ancicka, the duel with the fists still felt like a defeat. "The fight was one-sided. I didn't land a punch, Niklas Treutle landed eight," said the goalkeeper after Cologne's fourth win in a row: "It didn't matter, it was my first fight - it was good for the show."
Polar Bears surrender lead in the table
Meanwhile, the Fischtown Pinguins Bremerhaven won the top game after a late double strike. They beat the Straubing Tigers 2:0 (0:0, 0:0, 2:0) to overtake the Eisbären Berlin at the top of the DEL table. Goalkeepers Kristers Gudlevskis and Hunter Miska put their stamp on the game, the duo stopping all 55 shots until the 58th minute. Only then did Miha Verlic beat Straubing's goalie Miska. Just 66 seconds later, Felix Maegaard Scheel scored into the empty net to secure the Penguins' fourth win in the last five games.
The previous leaders lost 3:1 (0:0, 1:1, 0:2) at home to Adler Mannheim, with Daniel Fischbuch (59) and David Wolf (60) scoring late on to secure victory for the visitors. It was the second win in a row for the recently struggling Adler. Defending champions Red Bull Munich returned to winning ways. After two defeats, the team of former national coach Toni Söderholm defeated the Schwenninger Wild Wings 3:0 (1:0, 1:0, 1:0) and moved closer to the top three again. In Munich, Chris DeSouza put the hosts ahead (18th), Ben Smith (31st) increased the lead in the middle period. Andreas Eder (52) took care of the decision.

Despite the Cologne Sharks' goalie Tobias Ancicka and Nuremberg Ice Tigers' Niklas Treutle engaging in a rare fisticuffs incident during their DEL game, it was Ancicka who felt it as a setback. "I didn't land a punch, Niklas landed eight," he admitted, adding with a positive spin, "It didn't matter, it was my first fight - it was good for the show."
Amidst the DEL season, the Polar Bears, formerly leading the table, faced a 3:1 defeat at home against Adler Mannheim. Goals by Daniel Fischbuch (59) and David Wolf (60) secured a comeback victory for Adler, bringing them two wins in a row.
