Defense Leader's Debut Disappointment: Herbert Struggles After Joining Bayern's Squad

Gordon Herbert, the victorious coach from the World Cup, wasn't entirely pleased. "We weren't great shooters, we could've been failing into the sea," said the fresh coach of Bayern Munich, a team with a double-winning record, following their 73-59 victory against Chemnitz in the Bundesliga opening game.

Herbert commended the team's "solid" defense, which played a significant role in their win, despite only five shots out of 25 attempts from three-point range finding the hoop. "We're still evolving," he admitted, despite the triumph in a challenging game offensively.

Bayern Munich's CEO, Marko Pesic, was less critical of the team's performance. "This was a focused effort from our team," he summed up. "We could've been better, but our defense today was outstanding, good enough for the win. It's a positive sign because we'll need some time to click offensively."

The game against Chemnitz was just the beginning for Bayern under the 65-year-old Herbert. They aim to safeguard their national titles and make a powerful comeback internationally after a disappointing EuroLeague season last year. Star recruit Oscar da Silva led the scoring with 19 points and eight rebounds. "The guys want me to take charge, have the ball, and then I need to justify their faith," he stated.

Bayern's World Cup winners, Andreas Obst (3 points) and Niels Giffey (0), had subdued outings, while new recruit Johannes Voigtmann, also a World Cup winner, was absent due to injury. Herbert, who guided the German national team to bronze at the 2022 European Championships and gold at the 2023 World Cup, replaced Pablo Laso at Bayern Munich's helm.

Bayern has plenty of room to enhance themselves in the EuroLeague, where their objective is to advance to the playoffs. Last season, they ended up 15th with just 13 victories in 34 matches.

Herbert suggested, "We might need to work on our three-point shooting, as only five out of our 25 attempts found the hoop," indicating a potential area of improvement. In a bid to secure the ball, Pesic urged, "Next time, let's aim to throw with more precision, ensuring the ball doesn't slip away during crucial moments."
