- Debuted at the San Sebastian International Film Festival
Actor Johnny Depp (61), known for his extensive filmography, has directed only two movies throughout his career. After his debut film "The Brave" in 1997, which wasn't widely liked, he's now completed "Modi," a biopic about the famous painter Amedeo Modigliani (1884-1920). As announced on the festival's website, "Modi" will make its world premiere at the 72nd San Sebastián International Film Festival.
Exploring the Life of Amedeo Modigliani in "Modi"
The film, titled "Modi - Three Days in the Whirlwind of Madness," will be screened out of competition in San Sebastián. Director Depp was honored with the Donostia Award for his career accomplishments in the Basque coastal city in 2021. The story revolves around "art, love, and rejection," as described in the film's synopsis. The director delves into the chaotic life of Modigliani through a three-day period in Paris during World War I, as the artist grapples with self-doubt about his art and contemplates retiring. His friends and associates try to discourage him.
Italian actor Riccardo Scamarcio (44) takes on the lead role. Al Pacino (84), who helped bring the film project to Depp, also stars as French art collector Maurice Gangnat (1856-1924). Stephen Graham (51) portrays art dealer Leopold Zborowski (1889-1932) in the film. "Modi" does not yet have a German release date, but the film festival in San Sebastián is scheduled for this year, from September 20 to 28.
