DEB men on the brink of tournament victory: 5:3 against Austria
The German national ice hockey team has the best chance of winning the Germany Cup again.
The runners-up won 5:3 (0:1, 1:1, 4:1) against Austria in Landshut after a strong final third and go into the final day with two wins. Another win on Sunday (2.30 pm/Magentasport) against Slovakia would mean defending the title.
Benjamin Baumgartner from Swiss club SC Bern put the visitors ahead with two goals (10th/28th minute) in front of 4,200 spectators. Marc Michaelis, who also plays for EV Zug in Switzerland, was able to reduce the deficit to 1:2 for the team of national coach Harold Kreis after 32 minutes.
The DEB team turned up the heat in the final period: Michaelis again (44th), Filip Varejcka from EHC Red Bull Munich just 33 seconds later and his Munich teammate Yasin Ehliz (47th) gave the now strong German team a 4:2 lead. Baumgartner reduced the deficit to 3:4 with his third goal (53'). Daniel Pfaffengut scored a few seconds before the end to make it 5:3.
The German national ice hockey team, currently leading in the DEB tournament, aims to defend their Germany Cup title by winning the remaining match against Slovakia. If successful, they will have won the Germany Cup two years in a row, having just clinched a 5:3 victory against Austria in the DEB tournament.
