David Alaba seriously injured in Real win

"Very sad news"

David Alaba seriously injured in Real win

David Alaba is facing the end of the season - and therefore probably also the end of the European Football Championship in June. The Real Madrid defender tore his cruciate ligament in a league match and will be out for months following an operation.

A serious injury to defender David Alaba has considerably dampened Real Madrid's joy at temporarily leading the Spanish league table. During examinations, the Austrian international was diagnosed with a torn anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee, the club announced late on Sunday evening. Alaba is due to undergo surgery in the coming days and will be out for months. This could mean the end of the season for the former Bayern professional, and his participation in the European Championship in Germany (June 14 to July 14) is also questionable.

Alaba was injured in the first half of the 4:1 (2:0) home win against FC Villarreal and had to be substituted. Madrid coach Carlo Ancelotti spoke afterwards of "very sad news". Alaba's German teammate Toni Kroos wrote the following message on X (formerly Twitter) with three red hearts: "I love you, David Alaba." Alaba is captain of the Austrian national team, for which he has played 105 games so far.

"I've never seen three of my players injure cruciate ligaments in the space of three months," said Ancelotti, referring to the cruciate ligament ruptures suffered by goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois and defender Eder Militao. "The team has to do what it has done so far, despite the many injuries we've had. We've achieved even more than everyone expected. This team fights and plays well despite the problems and has an exceptional commitment. This is the only way we can replace all the injured players. We'll see in the next few days if we can do something."

Real have taken a one-point lead over Girona FC at the top of the table, but the surprise team can reclaim the lead in Monday's game against Deportivo Alaves. The goals for Real were scored by ex-Dortmund player Jude Bellingham (25th minute), Rodrygo (37th), Brahim Diaz (64th) and Luka Modric (68th). German professionals Toni Kroos and Antonio Rüdiger were in Madrid's starting eleven.

Despite the winning momentum, Real Madrid's joy was dampened by the serious injury to David Alaba, their Austrian international defender. Torn ACL in his left knee during the match against FC Villarreal means Alaba, who is also the captain of the Austrian national team, will be out for months and his participation in FC Bayern Munich's rival, Real Madrid, in the European Championship in June is uncertain.
