King Felipe VI of Spain - Daughter Leonor is now an officer candidate
Parents could barely keep up: King Felipe VI. of Spain (56) and his wife, Queen Letizia (51), attended a solemn military ceremony on a Wednesday. The focus was mainly on their eldest daughter, Princess Leonor (18), who was officially named an officer cadet during her current training. The royal family traveled to Saragossa in northeastern Spain for the military academy.
Princess Leonor has been studying at the same academy for almost a year, where her father, the current Spanish monarch, was trained from 1985 to 1988. The future queen received a badge from her father during the ceremonial event, which he personally attached to her uniform. Princess Leonor's rank is equivalent to that of a second lieutenant in the German Bundeswehr, a non-commissioned officer rank.
Princess Leonor: No Special Treatment in the Military
After Felipe handed over the badge to his daughter, he affectionately placed his hands on Leonor's shoulders before they both took their places together on the dais and followed the rest of the proceedings. It is currently planned that Princess Leonor, like her father, will complete a three-year military training. According to media reports, she will receive no special royal treatment. Leonor lives with twelve other officer cadets in a shared dormitory in the barracks and must also undergo normal military basic training. Her current salary is reportedly only 417 euros per month.
Queen Letizia chose a white summer dress with floral prints for the occasion. Princess Sofia (17), Leonor's sister, was also present in Saragossa. She wore a summery, white dress with an asymmetrical cut and thin black stripes. King Felipe, of course, appeared in accordance with his status - as did his daughter and heir, Princess Leonor herself.
