Darts-Star Van Gerwen allows his jaw to be broken multiple times

First a painful sports defeat, then a painful operation: Darts-Star Michael van Gerwen switches from the dartboard to the hospital. He will undergo multiple jaw surgeries for health reasons.

Michael van Gerwen bid farewell with a disheartened expression from darts. After the painful 15:18 defeat in the World Matchplay final against Luke Humphries, the Dutchman will focus on his health instead of trophies, arrows, and prize money in the coming weeks.

"I have a strong underbite and it bothers me a lot. They will break and realign both my upper and lower jaws. They will push my upper jaw six millimeters forward and pull my lower jaw three millimeters back," announced "Mighty Mike" during the World Matchplay in Blackpool to the Dutch newspaper "AD." His comeback is planned for late August.

It's important to "do the right thing for myself and think long-term," stated van Gerwen. "It's frustrating not even to be able to bite a slice of ham. Eventually, it's enough."

Humphries dominates the world elite

The major titles have gone to Humphries lately, who brought the Phil-Taylor-Trophy and 200,000 pounds (approximately 240,000 Euros) prize money home from the famous Winter Gardens. "Bringing my name to this trophy named after Phil Taylor makes me very happy. Doing it in the same year as my first World Championship title is very emotional for me," said Humphries.

In the world rankings, the Englishman is currently unbeatable at the top. Besides his successes at the World Championship and the World Matchplay, the 29-year-old currently holds the titles from the World Grand Prix, Grand Slam of Darts, and Players Championship Finals. "I have worked incredibly hard on my game. This is the reward," said Humphries. Van Gerwen loses his second place in the rankings to former World Champion Michael Smith and ranks third, despite having beaten Smith in the Blackpool semifinals.

Despite his recent victories, including the World Matchplay title and a substantial prize money, Luke Humphries expressed his joy in bringing the Phil-Taylor-Trophy home. Following Michael van Gerwen's decision to focus on his health after a disappointing World Matchplay final defeat, Humphries has secured an unassailable position at the top of the world rankings. Van Gerwen, the Darts-Star known as "Mighty Mike," will undergo multiple jaw surgeries for health reasons, switching his focus from the dartboard to the hospital, with a planned comeback in late August.
