Cross-country skier freezes penis in the middle of World Cup race

At temperatures of minus 19 degrees, the cross-country skiers are relentlessly sent out onto the trails, and the World Cup organizers in Kuusamo, Finland, show no mercy. One German's eyes freeze, others have hypothermic toes. One Swede was hit really hard.

Swedish cross-country skier Calle Halfvarsson suffered particularly badly at the World Cup in the "refrigerator" of Kuusamo. His "snorre" froze, the two-time relay vice world champion told the newspaper "Expressen", pointing to his genitals: "It hurts so damn much. It's terrible."

The cross-country skiers were put to a tough test on Sunday in 19 degrees below freezing in Finland. Halfvarsson had already had this mishap years ago. "It's lucky that I'm about to have my second child, because it's going to be difficult in the future if I carry on like this," said the 34-year-old with a laugh.

Nevertheless, he finished the 20-kilometre race in 18th place after 50 minutes, making him the best Swede. Afterwards, he lay in a tent for ten minutes to warm up his penis. The race was won by Jan Thomas Jenssen from Norway, who had been expected to be one of his many successful compatriots.

The German cross-country skiers also had to suffer in the freezing cold on Sunday. "On some laps, my vision was blurred because my eyes froze - despite my glasses. My optician will hate me," said Lucas Bögl. His toes also suffered despite wearing foot warmers.

According to the FIS regulations, competitions may only take place when it is no colder than minus 20 degrees. However, none of the DSV starters wanted to accept the cold as an excuse. Katharina Hennig also suffered from the temperatures. "In future, Katha should wear even thicker overshoes. That won't happen to her a second time," said national coach Peter Schlickenrieder. Olympic champion Hennig did not make it past 27th place in the 10-kilometer race.

Hennig's teammate Victoria Carl just wanted to "go to the sauna" after her eighth place, Pia Fink complained about stiff legs: "I couldn't move well anymore." Florian Notz explained that he felt "a bit dizzy" in the second half of the race.

In the harsh winter conditions of Kuusamo, even Nordic skiing races can pose challenges. Despite the severe cold, Swedish skier Calle Halfvarsson continued to participate in Nordic skiing events.

Despite the freezing temperatures during a World Cup race, Halfvarsson, known for his enthusiasm for winter sports, had to take a break to warm up his frozen "snorre" in a tent.
