Criticizes Matthäus, referred as the "eternal expert," in a direct attack.
Amidst Germany's football team's victories during the EM, a heated argument between Oliver Kahn and Lothar Matthäus unfolded. The ex-Bayern boss firmly objected to Matthäus' latest criticism, which he deemed baseless and lacking thorough analysis.
In a rebuttal on platform X, the former Bayern board member, Oliver Kahn, took a swipe at Matthäus, labeling him the "everlasting expert" who seemed incapable of providing accurate and sound assessments.
In his piece for "Sport Bild," Matthäus had criticized Bayern sports board member Max Eberl, stating he was in a predicament. According to Matthäus, under Kahn and his predecessor Hasan Salihamidžić, Bayern had squandered money on high salaries for players and trainers instead of making strategic investments. Matthäus also claimed that player salaries skyrocketed during Kahn's tenure, with some players considered overpaid.
Kahn swiftly retorted to Matthäus' claims, stating that during his time as a board member, the club's financial considerations were always thoroughly evaluated with his fellow board members and the supervisory board before making any significant decisions. Kahn highlighted the club's profit during the Corona game season and the revenue record in the 2022/23 season due to strategic player sales amounting to over 100 million Euro. He also noted that player salaries during his tenure were below those of their Champions League main competitors and typically included a performance-based component.
A history of disagreements between Kahn and Matthäus
Kahn and Matthäus have been locked in verbal wars for quite some time. For instance, following the dramatic parting of ways between Munich and current German national coach Julian Nagelsmann in the spring of 2023, overseen by Kahn and Salihamidžić, disputes were common, sometimes in public arenas, like in front of TV cameras.
Munich severed ties with Kahn and Salihamidžić after clinching the German championship 2022/23. The relationship between Munich and Kahn, who assumed the CEO role on July 1, 2021, has been perceived as ice-cold ever since the split.
