Bonus program - Copenhagen rewards tourists now for eco-friendly behavior

How does climate protection and tourism go together? This question is being posed by more and more destinations in light of the worsening climate crisis. The answers are varied. While many holiday destinations are deciding on limiting visitor numbers or stricter rules, the Danish capital Copenhagen is taking a different approach. The Copenhagen Tourism Office, Wonderful Copenhagen, is launching a unique initiative called "Copenpay," where tourists are rewarded for eco-friendly behavior.

Concretely, the project aims to motivate tourists with small incentives towards sustainable behavior. Over 20 businesses in the city are already participating in the project, which starts on July 15, 2024, with a tendency to increase. The focus is on three essential aspects: cycling, public transportation, and helping to keep the city clean.

A Cinnamon Snail for Sustainability

The whole thing should look like this in practice:

Whoever collects trash in the harbor gets a free kayak. After picking up trash in the City Park, one can enjoy a delicious cinnamon snail and a coffee for strengthening, the urban gardeners provide tourists with a free lunch as a thank you gift. Who uses public transportation or rides a bike instead of a car, they get a free boat tour through Copenhagen or a free drink at the Canal House or the rooftop bar "Level Six."

Copenhagen aims to be climate neutral

Those who want to participate can either register on the homepage or use the whole thing on trust. Rikke Holm Petersen, Communications Director at Wonderful Copenhagen, said in an interview with the "Washington Post," that proof may be required occasionally, such as a photo of the used bike or the public transportation ticket.

The goal of the initiative is therefore to use the thriving tourism in Copenhagen as a motor for more sustainability. But there is another reason for the project, as Holm Petersen explains: "We also want the tourists to have an unforgettable experience and have fun." The whole thing is possible initially until August 11, 2024. If the project is well received, it should be repeated in the coming year. It is only a part of the city's efforts to become climate neutral by 2025.

  1. Visitors to Copenhagen can enjoy a city trip that benefits both the environment and their wallets with the introduction of "Copenpay," a unique bonus program by Wonderful Copenhagen.
  2. As part of the Copenpay initiative, tourists who choose to cycle or use public transportation around Copenhagen will be rewarded with free experiences such as boat tours or drinks at popular venues like the Canal House and Level Six.
  3. The Danish capital, known for its commitment to environmental conservation, aims to add an extra incentive to its tourism offerings by promoting eco-friendly activities and offering bonuses through the Copenhagen Tourism Office's Copenpay initiative.
