Conflict between VfL Bochum and goalkeeper Riemann intensifies

Strife prevails at VfL Bochum as they prepare for their crucial relegation matches against Fortuna Düsseldorf. The Bundesliga's 16th-placed team shocked the football world on Monday by revealing that their regular goalkeeper, Manuel Riemann, would be absent for the upcoming confrontations against Fortuna. The two matches will take place on Thursday in Bochum and on Monday in Düsseldorf, both at 8:30 pm, being broadcast on Sat.1, Sky, and ntv.de's live ticker.

The club stated that Riemann and the coaching staff had mutually agreed on this decision, which stems from irreconcilable differences involving team matters. Although Riemann is generally considered untouchable in Bochum due to his impressive run of 290 appearances since he joined the club in 2015, the club has assured the public that this is not a suspension or punishment. They hope to address the issue with Riemann after the season's conclusion. However, they have chosen not to elaborate on the specifics of the matter.

In the meantime, VfL Bochum appear to have a viable replacement ready in the form of Andreas Luthe. The 37-year-old goalkeeper, who returned to his former club from 1. FC Kaiserslautern during the winter transfer window, is now fancied to don the gloves during the forthcoming fixtures against Fortuna. Having played for Bochum from 2001 to 2016, including in their prior relegation play-off against Borussia Mönchengladbach, Luthe has made one Bundesliga appearance this season - a 1:4 loss to Rasenballsport Leipzig.
