"The Generosity of Strangers" (Disney+)

The bleak satire "The Generosity of Strangers" chronicles three distinct narratives: That of an ambitious individual striving for dominance over his life's circumstances. That of a tormented law enforcement officer, whose estranged wife, presumed lost at sea, seemingly transforms into a totally different individual upon her resurfacing. And that of a steadfast woman who must locate an individual destined to become a renowned spiritual guide.

The film, directed by "The Lobster"'s Yorgos Lanthimos, features a star-studded cast. This includes Emma Stone ("Cruella"), Jesse Plemons ("Civil War"), and Willem Dafoe ("The Lighthouse"). At this year's Cannes Film Festival, Jesse Plemons was honored with the accolade for Best Actor for "The Generosity of Strangers." Streaming on Disney+ from August 30th.

Kiyoshi Kurosawa's mini-series intertwines thriller, drama, and fantasy elements to delve into the subjugation of women in contemporary Japanese society. How does one manage the trauma of losing a classmate or a child? And how does one find their sense of belonging in society while burdened by the weight of guilt?

These heart-rending questions lie at the core of the series "Atonement." Kiyoshi Kurosawa, who crafted the five-part series in 2012, is regarded as one of the most meticulous chroniclers of modern Japan. "Atonement" - a fusion of thriller, drama, and fantasy influences - is frequently cited as the pinnacle of Kurosawa's filmography. Streaming in the Arte-Mediathek until June 13, 2025.
