A Boy Who Travels Through Time. A Boy Who Witnesses Terrible Years. And A Girl Who Overcomes All Obstacles: What To Stream This Week.
"Time Bandits" (AppleTV+)
Terry Gilliam's comedy "Time Bandits" was one of the strangest children's films of the 80s. It follows a group of dwarf thieves who travel through time and plunder the palaces of the powerful. Now, AppleTV+ has a timely remake in the works. "Friends" star Lisa Kudrow is at the center of a ten-episode comedy series. Her band of robbers searches through space and time for treasures and finds fascinating worlds in the distant past. Much depends on the eleven-year-old Kevin (Kal-El Tuck) and his knowledge of history. Along the way, the "Time Bandits" witness the creation of Stonehenge, see the Trojan horse in action, escape prehistoric dinosaurs, cause chaos in the Middle Ages, experience the Ice Age, ancient civilizations, and much more.
"The Mafia Kills Only in Summer" (Arte-Mediathek)
Palermo in the 1970s. Ten-year-old Salvatore lives with his older sister Angela, who is searching for true love, his mother Pia, who is fighting for a permanent teaching position, and his loving but anxious father Lorenzo. When the beautiful Alice joins his class, Salvatore falls head over heels in love with her. In Palermo, it's said that one can die for love, which the boy takes literally. His father, who has witnessed a mafia murder, considers whether he should testify. Luca Ribuoli's series "The Mafia Kills Only in Summer" opens up a grim chapter of Italian history from the perspective of a young boy: the 70s to 90s in Palermo marked by the violence of the Cosa Nostra. It depicts the daily life of the Giammarresi family and their resistance against the ruthless corruption that prevailed in Palermo at the time, and the difficulty of not giving in to the mafia and its temptations. Now streaming in the Arte-Mediathek since August 2nd.
"The Woman and the Sea" (Disney+)
The film "The Woman and the Sea" (now on Disney+) stars Daisy Ridley as a talented swimmer born to immigrant parents in New York City around 1900. With the constant support of her older sister and dedicated coaches, she overcomes obstacles and the resistance of a patriarchal society to make it onto the Olympic swimming team and achieve an impressive feat: swimming the 34 kilometers from France to England.
