Color in the snow: Protest at the World Cup slalom in Gurgl
At the Ski World Cup slalom in Gurgl, Austria, activists caused an interruption shortly before the race was decided. Several people ran into the finish area and smeared the snow with orange paint.
Security forces then led them away and at least one person was pulled out of the finish area lying down. The area was then cleaned of the paint - while the remaining riders at the start had to wait for their second run. Fans acknowledged the action with shouts of booing, and top skier Henrik Kristoffersen from Norway also swore wildly at the activists.
The protest during the Alpine skiing World Cup slalom in Gurgl was sparked by environmental concerns. Despite the disruption, the event continued with the remaining skiers having to postpone their second runs.
