Classic Automobiles Conquer Electric Competition in the Mille Miglia 2024 Race

High-Speed Racing Competitions - Classic Automobiles Conquer Electric Competition in the Mille Miglia 2024 Race

The era of automobiles has taken root in Italy, thanks to generous subsidies aimed at vehicles, purchasers, and driving habits, with the Italian government aiming to excite locals about the future of electric mobility. However, the transition isn't straightforward, as the majority of cars on the Italian market are affordable small and used vehicles. The financial strain of switching to a new model equipped with a charger, plus the power grid of many regions being unprepared for a surge in fast charging stations and users, adds to the difficulty.

Mille Miglia Green Isn't Joining the Competition

The Lancia Y, one of the most popular cars in recent times, sees its price rise from its previous market value of approximately 15,000 Euro to nearly 23,000 Euro in its new generation, including all subsidies. The new Lancia Y also graces the Mille Miglia Green, a hotspot for bargain seekers, as the number of participants in the historic Mille Miglia has swelled considerably despite a high entry fee of over 12,000 Euro and long waitlists. Only seven electric cars started at the Mille Miglia Green 2024. Many car aficionados share the sentiment expressed by Thomas Kempner from Switzerland, who attends the event annually in Brescia, "Electric cars have nothing to do with the Mille Miglia," he says, "What's the point? We're here to witness historic racing cars." Still, the revamped historical Mille Miglia attracted massive crowds this year.

Despite the Italian government's efforts to promote electromobility, traditional motorsport events like the Mille Miglia continue to showcase classic cars. Surprisingly, only a few electric vehicles participated in the Mille Miglia Green 2024, with many car enthusiasts expressing their preference for the race's classic automobiles over electric alternatives, such as the opportunity to witness the participation of iconic Italian brands like Car in the Mille Miglia.
