Chris Colfer, who portrayed Kurt Hummel in "Glee" for six seasons, shared his own coming out story while appearing on "The View." Growing up in a "very conservative" town, he recalled that being openly gay was "dangerous."

When he read the script for his character for the first time, he discovered it was an openly gay role. Fearing the potential consequences, he felt frightened. "There were so many people telling me, 'Don't come out,' saying it would ruin my career," he recalled.

So, he initially hid his sexuality. Despite this, he admitted that "I can't hide it with my voice. I'm more effeminate than most people," and was advised to not address his sexuality as long as he could avoid it.

It was a young fan who encouraged him to go public. This fan wrote him a note, which included a rainbow-colored chain made of paper clips and the words, "thank you." That note made Colfer realize, "I have to come out."

Although he acknowledged that public knowledge of his sexuality might limit certain acting opportunities, Colfer expressed that "being a beacon of positivity and providing that comfort for people is way more important than attention."
