Champions League winner extends super series
It was hard work for SC Magdeburg, but in the end they were successful. The Bundesliga handball team is back at the top of the table. THW Kiel also celebrates a home win.
Champions League winners SC Magdeburg have extended their super streak with a hard-working victory and regained the lead in the German Handball League. The team coached by Bennet Wiegert won 32:30 (18:16) against VfL Gummersbach to secure its 19th consecutive competitive victory. The SCM thus overtook the Füchse Berlin (both 25:3), who are level on points.
Defending champions THW Kiel also maintained their winning streak. The Zebras celebrated their fourth league win in a row with a 39:30 (21:13) victory over Bergischer HC and remained within striking distance of the top quartet.
Wiegert breathed a sigh of relief after the final buzzer in Magdeburg. "It was anything but easy. That's the German league. Gummersbach simply play great handball," said the coach on the Dyn microphone: "I'm really satisfied."
THW Kiel extends with captain Duvnjak
The team from Gummersbach presented the Super Globe winners with a major challenge in front of 6600 spectators in the Getec Arena. The former German champions led by international Julian Köster even took a three-goal lead at 20:23 (40') after the break. However, the home side then turned on the heat and decided the game in the final straight.
Sweden's European champion Felix Claar was the most successful scorer for Magdeburg with ten goals, who still have six competitive games to play in the remainder of the calendar year before the European Championship break. The Icelander Omar Ingi Magnusson, who showed unusual weaknesses from the seven-meter line on Sunday, played his 100th Bundesliga game for SCM.
The home side only got going in Kiel after the visitors had taken three narrow leads - but then pulled away irresistibly. Niclas Ekberg and Sven Ehrig were the most successful scorers with six goals each in the unchallenged home win for the record champions, who announced the extension of the contract of their Croatian captain Domagoj Duvnjak until 2025 before the start of the game. Eight-time scorer Noah Beyer stood out for the BHC in their third game in a row without a win.
