BVB, which has failed again, is seething with excitement
Things are going well for Borussia Dortmund in the Champions League - but not at all in the Bundesliga. "It's hard granite that we're biting on," says national team player Julian Brandt. Sporting director Sebastian Kehl is really angry and the discussions about the coach continue to gather pace.
Bye-bye German championship? Borussia Dortmund are already ten points behind leaders Bayer Leverkusen after another sobering performance in the Bundesliga. And coach Xabi Alonso's team could even pull away to 13 points with a win against Eintracht Frankfurt. "When I look at the Bundesliga table, I personally don't get nervous," said national team player Julian Brandt after the dismal 1:1 (1:1) draw at FC Augsburg. In the catacombs of the WWK Arena, the attacking player reminisced about the previous season, when Dortmund finished sixth on matchday 15 with nine points fewer than the then league leaders FC Bayern Munich.
After that, Borussia delivered a furious second half of the season, but lost the tangible championship on the last matchday with a 2:2 draw against FSV Mainz 05. "A lot of things always happen," said Brandt three days after the strong performance in the Champions League against Paris Saint-Germain (1:1). The 27-year-old aptly describes the fact that BVB are not doing well in the Bundesliga following their DFB Cup exit. "It all seems very difficult, very forced," said Brandt. "It's hard granite that we're biting on at the moment." Against Augsburg, the team also showed "too little coolness".
Always dangerous after losing the ball
The plan to transfer the good performances from the European Cup into everyday life failed again against a relatively strong opponent - as is so often the case. "I had the feeling that it was always dangerous for us after losing the ball," analyzed BVB goalkeeper Gregor Kobel. "We got pressure on the ball too late. In the end, we opened up because we really wanted to win."
Meanwhile, sporting director Sebastian Kehl announced an in-depth analysis during the winter break following the latest setback. "We are disappointed, angry and frustrated because we came up two points short," said Kehl, according to Ruhr Nachrichten. The situation in the table "is not our aspiration." After the end of the season against FSV Mainz 05 on Tuesday, the sporting director wants to assess the situation in depth. "Now we need three points against Mainz, then we will draw a conclusion and go into the analysis," said Kehl, and warned: "We must not lose sight of our minimum goal of the Champions League."
"The result is definitely not enough"
Augsburg's Ermedin Demirovic (23rd minute) was able to equalize the deficit through Donyell Malen (35th minute). In the final phase, Dortmund missed the winning goal despite numerous chances. "The result is definitely not enough," said BVB coach Edin Terzić. "We said before the game that we want and need to pick up six points in the remaining games." Dortmund have already failed to do so.
Borussia will play their final game of the season against Mainz of all teams. A kind of coming to terms with the past for the entire club. "It doesn't help to moan. It's all about moving forward and accepting the challenge. We will rise to the challenge and hopefully reward our fans with a win in the last home game," announced Terzić, for whom the air is getting thinner and thinner.
Kehl did not comment on the coach's situation. TV pundit Lothar Matthäus, on the other hand, expects Terzić to be questioned at BVB during the winter break. "If such a round table takes place, the coach will certainly also be discussed," said the 62-year-old on Sky. Dortmund are "far behind expectations, not just in terms of points, but above all in terms of performance. They are simply not performing, they have not found themselves in this first half of the season so far."

Despite Borussia Dortmund's impressive performance in the Champions League, their disappointing form in the Bundesliga continues. Following a 1:1 draw against FC Augsburg, sporting director Sebastian Kehl expressed his frustration, stating, "We are disappointed, angry, and frustrated because we came up two points short." BVB's Soccer team, including national team player Julian Brandt, are currently ten points behind leaders Bayer Leverkusen in the Bundesliga and could potentially fall even further behind with a loss against Eintracht Frankfurt.
