BVB coach Terzić rages at referees

Borussia Dortmund had Bundesliga leaders Bayer Leverkusen on the brink of defeat, but still conceded a draw. Coach Edin Terzić is furious after the final whistle - but he doesn't blame his own team, but the referees.

Borussia Dortmund coach Edin Terzić has vented his anger at alleged wrong decisions by referees in the Bundesliga. "We discuss the VAR week after week, clear wrong decisions, handball and fouls," he said on the DAZN microphone after BVB's 1:1 (1:0) draw with Bayer Leverkusen.

Terzić was particularly annoyed when referee Daniel Siebert failed to whistle for a penalty in the 73rd minute. Karim Adeyemi had been touched by two opponents while dribbling and went to ground. Siebert allowed play to continue and the video assistant Benjamin Cortus did not intervene.

An absurdity for Terzić - and possibly justified by reservations about Adeyemi. "It's particularly about Karim Adeyemi. It's always about Karim Adeyemi, who is so nimble, who dribbles into this situation with - I don't know - 30 student kilometers," the coach scolded: "And that contact is enough. That's my clear opinion. That's why I don't want to and can't defend the referee."

"The clear line is missing"

DAZN expert Michael Ballack had previously described the contact as "too little" for a penalty. Terzić countered this with a list of various scenes from previous matches in which, in his opinion, similar situations were decided differently. In Stuttgart, for example, a penalty was whistled against his team.

"Wasn't that too little then?" asked Terzić: "That's what completely upsets me, because it's not fair. The penalties that are whistled against us, whether nationally or internationally, are out of all proportion to what happened here today, what happened last year in Bochum." He was referring to the 1-1 draw in Bochum last season, when BVB were denied a clear penalty. At the end of the season, Dortmund finished runners-up on equal points with Bayern Munich.

"There is no clear line: what is a penalty and what is not? We discuss the VAR every time, now we have it - who used it today? Who? Nobody!" said Terzić. The situation involving Adeyemi was "a completely decisive scene": "There are no two opinions for me, it's a clear contact, it's a clear penalty. The great opportunity to make it 2:0 was taken away from us."
