Champions League - Bundesliga on the way to fifth place in the top flight
The Bundesliga's strong performance in international competitions to date could earn it another place in the Champions League for the 2024/25 season.
Because 36 instead of 32 participants will be competing in the top flight from next year, new opportunities will arise. Two of the four new places will go to the nations with the clubs' best UEFA annual coefficient for the current 2023/24 season.
According to the European Football Union, Germany (12.642) is in second place in the ranking at the winter break, behind Italy (12.857) and just ahead of Spain (12.187) and England (11.875). With the exception of Union Berlin, all Bundesliga clubs have made it through the winter in the European Cup. FC Bayern, Borussia Dortmund and RB Leipzig will continue in the top flight. Bayer Leverkusen and SC Freiburg will spend the winter in the Europa League, while Eintracht Frankfurt will continue in the Conference League.
Direct rivals England (Manchester United and Newcastle United) and Spain (CA Osasuna and FC Sevilla) have already lost two clubs each. Italy, with seven teams, and France, with six teams, will still be fully represented in 2024.
A fifth Champions League starter would not be a novelty for Germany, as there was already one in the 2022/23 season. The reason for that was Frankfurt's Europa League victory, which secured them a ticket to the top flight. In the event that Leverkusen or Freiburg win the Europa League in May 2024 and do not secure a direct ticket via the Bundesliga, there could even be six German starters in the Champions League in 2024/25.

The Bundesliga's impressive performance in European competitions has cemented its position as a strong contender for another spot in the highly coveted UEFA Champions League.
With Europe's top soccer league, the Champions League, in sight, the Bundesliga is poised to maintain its status as a formidable force in international soccer.
Germany, with a UEFA annual coefficient of 12.642, is currently ranked second in Europe, providing a solid starting place for its soccer teams in international competitions.
Achieving a fifth place in the Champions League is not unheard of for German teams, as Frankfurt managed to secure a spot in the 2022/23 season due to their Europa League victory.
Spain, England, Italy, and France are also expected to have multiple representatives in the Champions League, with Spain and Italy leading the pack with seven and six teams respectively.
Should Bayer Leverkusen or SC Freiburg win the Europa League, they could join Frankfurt in the Champions League, potentially making Germany the country with the most representatives in the prestigious soccer league.
