Major Tournament - British Open: Schauffele, the Olympic champion, triumphs in Troon
After his next triumph in his illustrious career, Xander Schauffele embraced his family at the 18th green of the Royal Troon Golf Club. With wife Maya, mother Ping Yi, and father Stefan, the Olympic gold medalist celebrated his win at the British Open in Scottish Troon. For the 30-year-old American, it was two months after his first victory at the PGA Championship, making it his second triumph at a Major tournament.
Schauffele secured the victory with a strong final round of 65 strokes, besting American Billy Horschel and Englishman Justin Rose (both 277 strokes). For the win at this prestigious tournament, the Californian with German roots received a prize money of 3.1 million US-Dollars (2.85 million Euro) and the Claret Jug - a silver wine jug as the trophy. For a year, Schauffele will also bear the title "Champion Golfer of the Year."
US Star overcomes challenging conditions
Schauffele mastered the difficult conditions on the demanding Par-71 course along the Scottish west coast best. Heavy winds, deep sand bunkers, and extremely hard and bumpy fairways and greens demanded everything from the players over four days.
Through his father Stefan, who grew up in Stuttgart and later emigrated to California, Xander Schauffele also holds a German pass. However, Xander Schauffele has been one of the top players on the US Tour for years. Before his triumph at the British Open, he had already won eight PGA tournaments. In 2021, he won the gold medal for the USA at the Olympics in Tokyo.
Two German pros Marcel Siem and Alex Cejka had no decisive role in the final day. The 44-year-old Ratingen native Siem finished the tournament with a total of 298 strokes, placing him 72nd. The 53-year-old Cejka, British Open Senior winner, needed an extra stroke for the rounds and ended up 75th.
Woods takes consequences after early exit
Deep frustration reigned for US Superstar Tiger Woods and Northern Irish Rory McIlroy, who both experienced a sporting debacle and both withdrew after two days at the 152nd British Open. The now 48-year-old Woods took immediate action and declared his season over. Woods, who is dealing with physical issues after the February 2021 car accident and numerous surgeries, is considering retirement but is not quite there yet.
- Following his victory at the British Open, Xander Schauffele's mother, Ping Yi, was overjoyed and shared in her son's triumph.
- The PGA Championship and the British Open are two of the Major tournaments that Marcel Siem aims to excel in, as he continues his professional golf career.
- Despite his German roots through his father Stefan, Xander Schauffele has made a name for himself in the US PGA, consistently placing high in tournaments.
- The PGA Championship winner, Justin Rose, had a commendable performance at the British Open, finishing just behind Schauffele and Horschel.
- Tiger Woods, who faced an early exit at the British Open, is currently contemplating the consequences of his physical issues and potential retirement from the sport of golf.
- The international golfing community came together at the Troon Golf Club in Scotland for the prestigious US Dollar-rich PGA Championship, showcasing their talent and skill on the challenging course.
