Brazil Secures Hosting Rights for 2027 FIFA Women's World Cup

During the 74th FIFA Congress held in Bangkok, Thailand, Brazil won the bid to host the 2027 Women's World Cup, marking the first time the selection was determined by an open vote.

The showdown saw Brazil earning 119 votes while the joint bid from Belgium, the Netherlands, and Germany (BNG) garnered 78. The United States and Mexico had initially submitted a joint bid but decided to focus on hosting the tournament in 2031 instead.

FIFA president Gianni Infantino applauded Brazil's success, expressing confidence that they would deliver the best Women's World Cup yet. Brazil previously hosted the men's World Cup in 1950 and 2014. Ednaldo Rodrigues, president of the Brazilian Football Confederation, expressed his excitement over the win, promising to deliver the best tournament for women's soccer.

The 2027 Women's World Cup will be the 10th edition, with Spain taking the mantle in 2023, defeating England 1-0 in the final. Only the United States has hosted the tournament more than once and won it a record four times.

In a statement, FIFA described the bidding process as the "most comprehensive ever." The governing body introduced a Bid Evaluation Task Force that followed the scoring system employed to choose the location for the 2023 tournament, which eventually went to Australia and New Zealand.

Both bids fulfilled the requirements for selection, but Brazil had the upper hand when it came to infrastructure, including stadiums, accommodations, fan zones, and transport systems, as well as a lower risk assessment.

Despite missing one of their most talented players, the pitch in 2027 is expected to be star-studded. However, Brazil will be without Marta, a six-time World Cup participant and their all-time record goalscorer, who announced her retirement in April. Marta, at 38, boasts 115 goals in total.

The victorious Spanish team celebrates in 2023.
