Boxer Henry Maske Makes Headlines - Boxing luminary grieves the passing of a previous mentor.
Boxing legend Henry Maske is devastated by the loss of his former coach, Manfred Wolke. The Sport1 website reports that the German boxing icon passed away at the age of 81 in Frankfurt/Oder on May 29th.
Maske spoke to Bild, "The death of my mentor has hit me very hard. I was able to see him in the nursing home on January 24th and he was in great physical shape. However, he was suffering from dementia. Now he's gone and has been set free."
Manfred Wolke, who also won an Olympic boxing gold medal, trained numerous famous boxers throughout his career. Among them were Henry Maske, Axel Schulz, and Marco Huck. Huck reminisced in the Bild interview, "I was privileged to share part of my professional career with him and can say confidently that he was a great man. His legacy will live on in German boxing history."
Wolke had a successful boxing career before transitioning into coaching, becoming an Olympic champion in the welterweight class in 1968 in Mexico City. He then became a coach at ASK Vorwaerts Frankfurt, where he trained many decorated boxers. Even today, Marco Huck, a professional boxer, remembers Wolke fondly. "He was a great man, and his legacy will continue in German boxing history."
Manfred Wolke left behind his wife and three children. His greatest student, Henry Maske, was honored with the prestigious "Golden Sport Pyramid" award from the German Sports Aid Foundation in 2012, and shared the moment with his legendary mentor. Wolke was at Maske's side when he received the prize, which is associated with induction into the Hall of Fame of German sports.
The emotional images from that moment are forever etched in the memories of both Maske and Wolke.
