Bottom of the table annoys St. Pauli decisively late on

FC St. Pauli missed out on an important win twice within a week after taking the lead. After the draw against Hamburger SV, the league leaders now slip up at bottom-placed Osnabrück. The equalizer was scored shortly before the end.

FC St. Pauli suffered a small setback in the promotion race in the 2nd Bundesliga. The league leaders were held to a disappointing 1:1 (1:0) draw at bottom-placed VfL Osnabrück. Although the Kiezkickers remained unbeaten, they were unable to take full advantage of their city rivals Hamburger SV's defeat against SC Paderborn.

In front of 15,741 spectators in the sold-out stadium at Bremer Brücke, Jackson Irvine put St. Pauli ahead in the 6th minute. However, substitute Haralambos Makridis rewarded a courageous Osnabrück performance after the break with a deserved equalizer (82'). Osnabrück's Niklas Wiemann was shown a yellow card in stoppage time. It was the Purple & White's first point under new coach Uwe Koschinat. A week ago, they had suffered an embarrassing 4-0 defeat at FC Schalke 04.

St. Pauli clearly had the game under control in the first 45 minutes. The visitors took the lead with their very first chance. Irvine headed home from a corner. Coach Fabian Hürzeler's team then controlled the game at will. However, the visitors failed to extend their lead and make things clear early on.

As a result, St. Pauli came under pressure once again in the second half. The Osnabrückers now discovered their fighting spirit and put up a thrilling fight against the big favorites. Michael Cuisance first missed a great chance to equalize twelve minutes before the end, but then Makridis was on hand.
