Bochum redeem themselves with first home win of the season
VfL Bochum can still do it: win at home. For the first time in this Bundesliga season, coach Letsch's team managed to do so, and in the end it was even clear-cut against Wolfsburg. Gladbach and Hoffenheim made it more exciting - and Leipzig also had to fight to the end.
RB Leipzig - 1. FC Heidenheim 2:1 (2:1)
Led by goalscorer Lois Openda, RB Leipzig returned to winning ways in the Bundesliga and secured a Champions League place for the time being. Coach Marco Rose's team won 2:1 (2:1) against newly promoted 1. FC Heidenheim and moved up to fourth place in the table, at least for one night, after two previous defeats in competitive matches.
Belgian international Openda (29th, penalty) and Yussuf Poulsen (44th) scored in sub-zero temperatures to secure victory for the Saxons, who could have won by a far greater margin: Leipzig, however, wasted chances, with the post also preventing another goal from Openda (78th) and the crossbar an own goal from Heidenheim's Omar Haktab Traore (90.+1).
Leipzig (26 points) have now overtaken Borussia Dortmund (24) in the battle for the international places, with a direct clash against the Westphalians next week. Meanwhile, the courageous FCH (11), for whom Benedikt Gimber (45.+1) scored the equalizer, remain stuck in the relegation battle.
VfL Bochum - VfL Wolfsburg 3:1 (2:1)
VfL Bochum gained some breathing space in the relegation battle with their first home win in 189 days - against Niko Kovac's dreaded opponents, of all people. The Westphalians defeated VfL Wolfsburg 3:1 (2:1) and inflicted their coach's first defeat in their 13th encounter.
Patrick Osterhage (19) and Bernardo (39) scored their first Bundesliga goals to lead the hosts to their first three-pointer at the Ruhrstadion since the 3-0 win over Bayer Leverkusen on May 27 - and to twelfth place in the table with 13 points. Mattias Svanberg (45.+1) reduced the deficit for Wolfsburg, who conceded their sixth away defeat in a row. Christopher Antwi-Adjei (87') restored the two-goal gap.
VfL coach Thomas Letsch, who had extended his contract until 2026 on Thursday, started Matus Bero in the starting eleven again after recovering from a torn inner ligament. Kovac, who remained unbeaten in ten games against Bochum as a player and triumphed 4-0 and 5-1 as a coach last season, only made one substitution: Moritz Jenz came in for the injured Sebastiaan Bornauw. Captain Maximilian Arnold, who had been out of the side recently, was absent with back problems.
Borussia Mönchengladbach - 1899 Hoffenheim 2:1 (0:0)
Borussia Mönchengladbach celebrated their third home win in a row and at least temporarily moved into the top half of the table. The team of coach Gerardo Seoane won 2:1 (0:0) against TSG Hoffenheim in front of 49,341 spectators at Borussia-Park and thus also celebrated a successful dress rehearsal for the round of 16 of the DFB Cup on Tuesday against VfL Wolfsburg (20:45/ARD and Sky).
Alassane Plea scored from the penalty spot (58') and Nathan Ngoumou (80') for the home team. Hoffenheim, on the other hand, who scored through Wout Weghorst (60') to make it 1-1 at the interval, have now gone four league games without a win. In addition, the visitors' strong away streak was snapped: it was their first defeat in seven matches away from home.
