Biathlon double success for Rees and Strelow
Roman Rees has become the first German in almost 15 years to win the overall World Cup leader's yellow jersey with the first biathlon World Cup victory of his career.
Although the 30-year-old missed a penalty in the individual race, he came out on top after 20 kilometers ahead of his equally outstanding teammate Justus Strelow thanks to great equipment and a good skiing performance.
The duo thus celebrated the first double success for German biathletes in more than six and a half years - the last time Simon Schempp and Erik Lesser had stood on the podium together was on January 20, 2017 at the mass start in Oberhof. The last German skier to wear the yellow jersey was three-time Olympic champion Michael Greis on December 6, 2008.
Rees had a 12.1-second lead over Strelow, who also had a one-minute penalty; it was also the 26-year-old's best career result and his first ever World Cup podium. Third place went to overall World Cup winner Johannes Thingnes Bö (2 faults/+ 25 seconds), who had won 19 races in the previous season including the World Championships.
Roman Rees and Justus Strelow both excelled in the World Cup Winter sports competition, with Rees clinching his first career biathlon World Cup victory and the coveted yellow jersey. This achievement marked the first time in over six and a half years that German biathletes celebrated a double success, as Strelow also reached the podium following a strong performance.
