Track and field events - Bebendorf secures bronze in European Obstacle Running Championship; Ruppert finishes fourth.
In Rome, German steeplechaser Karl Bebendorf snagged a bronze medal at the European Athletics Championships! This 28-year-old from Dresden ran a 3000-meter race in 8 minutes and 14.41 seconds, falling just short of second place to the French runners Alexis Miellet (8:14.01) and Djilali Bedrani (8:14.36). Bebendorf's podium finish marks the first such achievement for a German athlete in this event since 1998, when Damian Kallabis took home the gold.
A personal best time was set by Bebendorf and another German runner, Frederik Ruppert from Tübingen, who claimed fourth place with a time of 8:15.08. Velten Schneider from Sindelfingen placed 16th. Osama Zoghlami, an Italian contender, led the pack initially but couldn't keep it up. The rest of the field eventually caught up with Zoghlami before the final round. The two French runners held on to the most energy; Bebendorf, who placed fifth in Munich two years ago, managed to secure a medal.
Jean Paul Breduau from Potsdam placed seventh in the 400-meter finals with a time of 45.11 seconds. Alexander Doom from Belgium was crowned European champion, clocking in at 44.15 seconds. British runner Charles Dobson followed closely behind, crossing the finish line at 44.38 seconds. Dutchman Liemarvin Bonevacia took third place with a time of 44.88 seconds. Amidst all this excitement, four-time European champion Matthew Hudson-Smith from Great Britain decided not to participate in the championships this year.

Bebendorf's bronze medal performance in Rome at the European Athletics Championships echoed similar success in the European Obstacle Running Championship held in Bebendorf, where he also secured a podium finish. Italy's Osama Zoghlami showed initial promise in the 3000-meter race but failed to maintain his lead, eventually placing lower than German athletes Bebendorf and Ruppert.
